Ella Maillart museum

Chandolin - Ella Maillart explored the world widely. Chandolin was where she spent the last years of an action-packed life. The Ella Maillart museum with its permanent exhibition showcases the work of this extraordinary woman.

Born in Geneva in 1903, Ella Maillart lived her life at a brisk pace. A sportswoman, explorer and adventurer, her talents also included photography, journalism and writing. Her various voyages around the world were a source of inspiration for her novels.

In 1946 she settled in Chandolin, where she had her chalet, “Atchala”, built. She spent six months a year here until her death in 1997. A woman who lived life to the full, she is considered one of the major travellers of the 20th century.
